Ron Palmer, Founder
Ron Palmer is a nationally recognized legendary high school boy’s basketball coach. For 25 basketball seasons, he led Long Beach Polytechnic High School, California, to 7 California Interscholastic Federation – Southern Section Boys Basketball Championships and 1 national championship title. After coaching 12 seasons at Poly, Palmer was hired by Cal. State Long Beach to be its first African American head men’s basketball. He spent 3 seasons there before returning to Poly once again to lead them to four more CIF-SS championships. Coach Palmer was named national Coach of the Year twice and he received that honor several times by the CIF. He presently is winding up his illustrious career as the head coach of Hayfield High School in Alexandria, Virginia.
Coach Palmer is a master at teaching the fundamentals of basketball to young people and was one of the early pioneers of providing tutorial services to the basketball players in his program at Poly.
“I have always firmly believed and lived by the creed that there must be a careful balance between athletics and academics before a young athlete can be truly crowned a champion, or be a success in his or her amateur career.”
Coach Palmer prepped at Seaside High School in Monterey, California where he played basketball and excelled in the long jump event on his high school track and field team. From there he went on to star in those same events at the University of Oregon where he was also an outstanding track star. He embarked on a teaching career along with a basketball and track and field coaching tenure commencing at Pasadena High School in the 1970’s where he coached former Los Angeles Laker star Michael Cooper. In 1973he was hired by Poly High School as the first African American head basketball coach in the school’s history. And, the rest as they say, is history.
"Our program is a comprehensive five-day high level basketball instruction and math intervention event. It is designed to work on development of the whole person and includes activities that deal with character building, improving and enhancing the athletic and academic abilities of the participants."
This is our sixth year at California State University, Long Beach. Our success in past years was phenomenal and we are looking for even greater success each year."
It’s not just a basketball camp…
Erroll Parker, Program Director
Erroll Parker was a long time varsity assistant basketball coach with Ron Palmer at Long Beach Poly High School. He helped Coach Palmer and Poly win 5 CIF Championships and 1 California State Championship and, in the same year (1984), a high school national basketball title. Coach Parker is still involved with the Poly Boys Basketball Program as an Academic Coordinator in the REBOUND program. He is also the Executive Director of the Ron Palmer “Elite” Summer Basketball & Academic Camp, which is now in its 6th year.
“I think this Camp is unique from other camps because we put just as much emphasis on academic development as basketball development. The fact that this camp is on campus at one of the most prestigious California State Universities shows our dedication to higher education and the commitment that CSULB President F. King Alexander has in inspiring young people toward education at the earliest possible age.”
